Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion typically is done in the office. It targets the outermost layer of skin – thinning, smoothing and reducing blocked follicles. Patients typically notice a smoother appearance and can return to their normal activities immediately. Debris lodged in skin cells disappears, and the newer skin absorbs topical treatments such as moisturizers much more readily.

A fine, sandpaper-type substance is rubbed on the skin, and it finely resurfaces the superficial layers of the skin. A series of these procedures will improve the skin appearance and reverse the appearance of aging. Scarring, fine lines, moderate wrinkles, pigmentation changes and uneven tones are improved. At the same time, dull, lifeless, sun-damaged skin appears more soft and youthful.

During the procedure, patients notice a mild scratching sensation, like a nail file being rubbed along the skin. In further treatments, patients say it feels like a deep massage. The face is usually red for anywhere from 30 minutes to 24 hours afterward.
