Breast Augmentation (Augmentation Mammoplasty) Implants
There has been a
great deal of concern about breast implants. It’s important
to know that all breast implants now are saline (salt water)
filled. If a leak or problem does occur, the salt water leaks
out and is absorbed into the tissues without any difficulty.
Implants come in many textures and sizes; you and your surgeon
will discuss the importance of selecting the right size.
This procedure generally is done for women who are unhappy
with their breast size, who have imbalanced breasts (one larger
than the other) or who are looking for reconstructive surgery
following other types of breast surgery, such as breast cancer.
The operation is completed with the patient under general
anesthesia, usually on an outpatient basis. The implant is
placed through an incision made either under the breast, around
the nipple or under the arm. Most surgeons prefer the incision
under the breast in the fold of skin. The procedure takes
about one to two hours. Poor healing and, therefore, wider
scars are more common in patients who smoke or have an infection.
There also is a possibility of losing feelings in your nipples
or breasts temporarily or permanently.
This type of surgery does enlarge the breasts, but doesn’t
usually change the shape of the breasts. Studies also have
shown that women with implants are not at a higher risk for
breast cancer. They should continue performing breast self
exams and having mammograms as recommended by their primary
care physician. It is important to tell the mammography technician
about the implants so that the correct views can be performed.
